Teachers
Teaching is a demanding vocation that requires constant renewal of mind, heart, and spirit. Before there can be external renewal of education there must be internal renewal for teachers.
Often, we delve into WHAT to teach, go a little deeper into HOW to teach, and less often into the WHY of teaching. The Courage to Teach Program explores the rarely asked question of WHO. Who is the self that teach? How does the quality of my selfhood form or deform the way I relate to my students, my subject, my colleagues, my world?
Courage to Teach Retreats
Based on Parker Palmer's approach to professional development, which is rooted in the belief that good teaching flows from the identity and integrity of the teacher, The Courage to Teach Program is a series of quarterly retreats led by facilitators trained by the Center for Teacher Formation. The program focuses on renewing heart, mind and spirit through the exploration of the teacher's life, recognizing birthright gifts and strengths, and acknowledging limitations. Shorter offerings such as one-day workshops are also available.
